Properties and Uses: Diuretic, einmenagogue,
hypnotic, stomachic. In Popular use tarragon serves to relieve digestive
problems and catarrhal difficulties, as a diuretic to stimulate the
action of the kidneys, and as an emmenagogue to promote the onset of
menstruation. The tea stimulates the appetite, especially when it has
been lost because of illness. Taking the tea before going to bed helps
to overcome insomnia.

of Thuja are useful as a counterirritant in the relief of muscular aches
and pains, and for the usual purposes of such a remedy. Boiled with

Properties and Uses: It is said that Thyme is to the trachea and bronchitis
what peppermint is to the intestines and stomach. It contains an aromatic
oil called thymol that is responsible for many of its excellent properties.

Properties and Uses: Astringent, fumigatory, narcotic toxic, used
to flavour snuff and tobacco. It is employed in whooping cough. Dipteryx
oppositifolia is used for the same purposes, but is less valuable.

Properties and Uses: Antiphlogistic, astringent, hemostatic. The decoction
and tincture is used for diarrhea, enteritis, and inflammation of the
mucous membranes in the mouth. The tincture is also good for sealing hemorrhanes,
for leucorrhea, and for fevers. Diluted it makes a good mouthwash and
gargle for sore throat. The root as an excellent astringent, is used for
chronic and infecxtious catarrhal enterits, dysentery, and jandice. It
is especially beneficial for intestinal problems where diarrhea and constipation
alternate.

Properties and Uses:: Astringent, diuretic, tonic.
Uva Ursi helps to reduce accumulations of uric acid and to relieve the
pain of bladder stones and gravel. Use it to alleviate chronic cystitis;
it usually will change the color of urine but this need not cause alarm.
The tea or tincture can also be used for bronchitis, nephritis, and
kidney stones. It may also help where bedwetting is a problem containing
tannic acid and arbutin. CAUTION: Excessive use of Uva Ursi can lead
to stomach distress, and prolonged use can produce chronic poisoning.
Valerian
Root, (Valeriana officinalis)

Properties and Uses: Nervine, sleep aid. Valerian is a strong sedative
and one of the best nerve tonics. It is an excellent remedy for people
under emotional stress or pain. In a recent study done on chronic sleeplessness,
valerian improved the quality of sleep in 89% of the participants. Of
those people, 44% described their night's rest as perfect sleep.

Properties and Uses: The dried cured seed-pods, i.e. the Vanilla Bean.
Aromatic carminative. Rarely used for medicinal purposes other than as
a pharmaceutical flavoring. Principally employed as a culinary a culinary
and commercial flavoring and in cosmetics. Extract and oil shown in some
studies to be stress relieving and aphrodisiac.

Properties and Uses: Camivora is derived from tile
plant Venus' Flytrap (Dionaen muscipula). This is a standardized solution
used in the treatment of chronic diseases, including most forms of cancer,
ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, all types of herpes infections,
chronic arthritis, and almost any immune deficiency state, including
AIDS. In cases of cancer, Carnivora works therapeutically to shrink
solid tumors, according to its proponents, but does not help with
blood abnormalities such as leukemia. Also, it works best If the patient
has not previously undergone chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Carnivora's
proponents also claim that in other clinical applications, it has been
effective in boosting, immune function and eliminating the human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) from the blood.
Vervain

Properties and Uses:: In Europe, plant tea
used for obstructions of liver and spleen, headaches, and nervous disorders.
Leaves considered diuretic, milk inducing; extracts analgesic. Used experimentally
in China to control malaria symptoms, kill blood flukes (parasites)
and germs, stop pain and inflammation. Chinese studies suggest that
herbage of this plant is synergistic with a prostaglandin (E2). Russian
studies show adaptogenic activity of the alcoholic extract or tincture.
Bitter,
hepatic, colds and fever inflammation. Nervine, sedative, depression,
tension and stress tonic.

Properties and Uses:: Aromatic,
stimulant, tonic. Most of this uses for the aromatic roots of Vetiver
are nonmedical, but a tea made from the roots can be taken as a generally
stimulating and tonic drink.

Properties and Uses:
All parts contain active ingredients. Decocted flowers make an eyewash,
and leaf tea treats varicose veins. The flower syrup is antiseptic and
a mild laxative, and with the leaves treats coughs, headaches, and insomnia.
The root treats bronchitis. The leaves are a folk remedy for breast and
lung cancer. The aerial parts of Heartsease are cleansing and are a circulation
and immune system stimulant, used for chronic skin complaints.

cathartic effect, but as a home remedy it should be diluted -- one teaspoonful
to a pint of water.

Oak Bark, (Quercus alba)

Properties and Uses: Astringent, tonic. An Infusion
of white oak bark can be used Internally or for hemorrhoids and other
rectal problems menstrual and blood in the urine. Used internally and
externally at the same time, white oak bark makes a good medication
for varicose veins. The tea has also been used to stop internal hemorrhage,
reduce fever, and wash sores and skin irritations. For mouth and throat
irritations, use it as a gargle or mouthwash.

The stem bark is a
painkiller, a fever-reducer, and an original source of salicylic acid
for aspirin. Various bark extracts are used as a sore throat gargle;
for heartburn; stomach problems, and food poisoning; to relieve arthritic
pain; and to remove corns. Infused leaves make a tea for nervous insomnia
and are added to baths to ease rheumatism.

substances (including lactucerin); sugar; caoutchouc; traces of a mydriatic
alkaloid; and other substances. Part Used: dried latex, dried leaf.

Yam Root, (Dioscorea villosa)

Properties and Uses:
A herb that relaxes spasms, stimulates bile flow, and mildly dilates
blood vessels. Wild Yam does not contain estrogen in "full"
form or other hormones. It contains steroid sapoins, primarily "diosgenin,"
which is similar to estrogen, but approximately one-tenth as strong.
Several important species exist, some with different properties. Useful
in colic.
Wild
Yam will soothe the nerves in neuralgia and pains of the urinary tract;
also recommended for cramps; relieves pregnancy nausea and has use in
threatened miscarriage.

Properties and Uses: Nature's aspirin. No herb used by man throughout
the ages for health purposes has a longer recorded history or a wider
use in the world. It is one of nature's greatest gifts to mankind as a
pain-relieving, fever-lowering. anti-inflammatory agent without any side
effects. Helps relieve symptoms of headache, fever, arthritis, rheumatism,
bursitis, dandruff, eye problems (eyewash), influenza, chills, eczema
and nosebleed. Most effective in concentrated extract form.
Wintergreen

Properties and Uses: Wintergreen is diuretic and is believed by some
to have a peculiarly beneficial action in indicated conditions. Small
doses stimulate the stomach. Large doses have the opposite effect and
cause vomiting. It is an old-time remedy.

Properties and Uses:: As a traditional remedy, used internally and
as a liniment, it is applied to varicosities, varicose veins and hemorrhoids
and any swollen engorged tissues; may help control diarrhea andease
dysentery in formulas.
It
is an old-time remedy that still is in popular use. The Indians used
it in the form of a poultice, in external irritations, bruises, etc.
The tea may be advantageiously used as a mouth wash for conditoins of
irritation and as a vaginal douch for simple vaginitis.

Properties and Uses::
American Indians used root tea for stomach aches, diarrhea, anemia,
and heart trouble; also in cough medicines; poulticed for swellings,
tumors, sore muscles. Finely grated roots were secretly added to food
as an alleged aphrodisiac. Herb is a nervine tonic and cerebral stimulant.

betonicin and turicin), cholin. Stimulant, brain-tonic, nervine, alterative,

A fragrant and exhiliarating tea may be made from the leaves and blossoms
of the Sweet Woodruff

Wormseed, (Chenopodium anthelminticum)

Properties and Uses::
Until recently, the essential oil distilled from flowering and fruiting
plant was used against roundworms, hookworms, dwarf (not large) tapeworms,
intestinal amoeba. Now largely replaced by synthetics. Warning: Oil is
highly toxic. Still, a dash of the leaves, called Epazote, is added as
a culinary herb to Mexican bean dishes in the belief that it may reduce
gas. May cause dermatitis or an allergic reaction. Tiny seeds are anti-parasitic.
Wormwood

Properties and Uses: Extremely bitter leaves nibbled to stimulate appetite.
Teas a folk remedy for delayed menses, fevers, and as a vermifuge. Good
for stomach, liver and gallbladder ailments. Formerly used to make the
liqueur Absinthe, which contains the mildly toxic principle thujone, chemically
similar to THC. Intoxication from Absinthe liqueurs has been likened to
that induced by marijuana. It is theorized that active component of both
plants may react with the same receptors of the central nervous system.
Common Wormwod preparations contain virtually no thujone, which can only
be concentrated effectively by a complicated multi-phase extraction process
including double steam distillation.
Yarrow

Properties and Uses: Stimulant, astringent, antiseptic, haemostatic,
tonic, diuretic and healing. Bodily influences. Yarrow settles nerves
and is a diaphoretic, which reduces high blood pressure. It relieves
shortness of breath and wasting of spinal marrow. American Indians used
Yarrow as a remedy for rundown feeling and a digestive aid. They also
used it to increase urinary flow from the kidneys. Herbalists have used
it for infant diarrhea, uterus problems, Bright's disease, gas, piles,
sore nipples, fistulas, flu and hair loss. Also used as remedy for bedwetting,
involuntary loss of urine and as a nervine. It stops bleeding in most
cases, whether internal or external.
Belonging to the aromatic class of sudorific tonics,
Achilles is supposed to be the first that left the virtues of this herb
to posterity. As a result, the active Principle of this plant is called
Achilleine, which is mostly used in the South of Europe.

Dock Root, (Rumex crispus)

Properties and Uses: Alterative, astringent, mild laxative, cholagogue.
Yellow Dock tones up the entire body. It is used for such conditions as
infections, tumors, liver and gall bladder problems and ulcers. It stimulates
the flow of bile, making it slightly laxative. Being high in iron, it
is used in the treatment of anemia. It is beneficial for skin problems,
especially those caused by constipation or liver dysfunction.

Properties and Uses: Contains a rich supply of Vitamins (A, C & B complex),
minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium potassium, manganese, silica
and phosphorous), choline, inositol and carotene. Used in South America
as a tea. Bodily influences: Stimulates the central nervous system without
becoming a habit or an addiction. It induces better patterns of sleep.
Acts as a mild diuretic. relaxes peripheral blood vessels; thereby reducing
blood pressure. Research has shown that mate arouses the mind and body
reduces fatigue and reduces the effects of stress. Mate has been used
clinically to assist those who wish to kick the caffeine habit. As mate
is used caffeine addiction disappears. The active ingredient in mate (mateine)
does resemble caffeine structurally and belongs to the same class (xanthines).
Mate does not contain caffeine.

American Indians used root in salves or Poultices for sores, skin
diseases, and sprains. Pounded roots were put in water to stupefy
corralled fish so they would float to the surface for easy harvest.
Plant yields a strong fiber. Fruits used as food by some people. Saponins
in roots of yucca species possess long-lasting soaping action and
have been used in soaps and shampoos.
Warning: Root compound (saponins) are toxic to lower life forms.

Properties and Uses:
Sexual stimulant to men and women that increases libido. Stimulates
erectile tissue in both sexes, and enhances sexual sensitivity.

Properties and Uses:
Contains essential oil, resin, fat, sugar, starch, acids, albuminoids.
Has carminative, stomachic, stimulant, aromatic, expectorant, demulcent,
and diuretic properties.
