Properties and Uses:
Demulcent, expectorant, laxative, restorative and stimulant to the adrenal glands. Licorice builds the adrenals and induces the production of cortisone and aldosterone. It is one of the best-known herbs for hypoglycemics. Its demulcent and anti-inflammatory qualities makes licorice particularly beneficial for ulcers. It is also effective for liver related problems. Chinese Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) is slightly stronger, and usually appears in cleaned slices.
Caution: Licorice Root should be avoided by people with high blood pressure. It contains natural sugars which may disturb the sugar balance of some diabetics, so it is sometimes processed to remove the sugars, i.e. "Deglycyrrhinated Licorice - DGL."
